Collect

Acceptable Sample Types:

  • Endocervical or vaginal swab collected using the Xpert Vaginal/Endocervical Specimen Collection Kit. Collection kits may be obtained by contacting Avera Queen of Peace Laboratory. 
  • Urine- Patient should not void for at least 1 hr. prior to specimen collection. Patient must collect the first 20-30 mls of initial urine stream in a plastic, preservative-free collection cup. Patient should NOT cleanse prior to collection.
  • Eye Specimens for C. trachomatis: (Blue) swabs collected using the APTIMA Combo 2 collection kit.  Collection kits may be obtained by contacting Avera Queen of Peace Laboratory.  ARUP can perform with a disclaimer or the other option is to order a chlamydia culture.
  • Rectal or Throat: (Orange) swabs collected using the APTIMA collection kit.  Collection kits may be obtained by contacting Avera Queen of Peace Laboratory. 

Storage/Transport Temperature

Swab or urine submitted in Xpert Swab or Urine Collection Kit stored 2-30o C. (Refrigerated or Room Temp)

Unpreserved urine: Refrigerated (2-8o C)

Eye specimens (for C. trachomatis testing only) submitted in APTIMA media stored at room temperature (15-30C).  

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Endocervical and Vaginal Swabs in Xpert Swab Collection Kit are stable for 60 days when stored at 2-30C.

Unpreserved Urine Specimens: Refrigerated (2-8o C) - 8 days

Urine Specimens in Xpert Urine Collection Kit:
Female Urine: 2-15o C = 45 days; 15-30o C = 3 days
Male Urine: 2-30C = 45 days

Eye:  Specimens submitted in APTIMA transport media are stable for 60 days.

Unacceptable Conditions

Swabs not in Xpert Collection Kit. Specimens without a swab in Xpert Transport Media. Large white swab is for preparatory cleaning of the endocervix and is unacceptable for testing.

 

Remarks

Culture is recommended for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae detection in cases of suspected sexual abuse or suspected failure of therapy.
