Interpretive Data

Two autoantibodies are included in the Thryoid Antibody Panel: TPO Antibody and TG antibody.
Thyroid autoimmune disease is the major factor underlying hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and tends to occur in a genetically predisposed population. Autoantibodies may be found in less than 10% of the normal population at low levels and in patients with non-thyroidal illnesses, such as inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Antithyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies are autoantibodies directed against the thyroid peroxidase enzyme and can be elevated in most cases of Hashimoto's disease, many cases of Graves' disease, and less commonly with other types of thyroiditis.

Thyroglobulin is produced only by the thyroid gland and is a major component of the thyroid follicular colloid. Autoantibodies to thyroglobulin are often present in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. Approximately 10% of healthy individuals have TG antibodies at low levels; higher concentrations are found in 30% and 85% of patients with Graves"disease and Hashimoto's thryoiditis, respectively.
TG autoantibody measurements are useful for evaluating samples submitted for thyroglobulin measurements because of TG autoantibody interference in these assays.
