Collect

At least 1.0 mL arterial or venous whole blood in a plastic blood gas syringe with dry balanced heparin anticoagulant.
Immediately remove any syringe air bubbles from collected sample prior to transport.

Remove needle prior to transportation.

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Sample submitted with needle attached (remove immediately post collection);
  • Uncapped sample syringe
  • Air bubbles in sample
  • Clotted sample
  • EDTA or citrate anticoagulant
  • Sample not properly identified
  • Insufficient sample volume.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal:  Deliver to the laboratory immediately. Maintain sample at room temperature.
Deliver to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.
If sample cannot be submitted to the laboratory within 30 minutes, transport on ice within 1 hour.

Offsite: Utilize emergency courier to provide transport within criteria listed above.  Please inquire with the receiving laboratory if emergency courier services are available prior to collecting the sample.  If the sample is unable to reach the testing laboratory within 30 minutes of collection on ice, please do not collect the sample.  Instruct the patient to have the labs drawn at the testing laboratories onsite outpatient phlebotomy lab to avoid unnecessary recollection due to delayed transport.
