Container: Flocked nasopharyngeal or nasal swab submitted in Viral Transport Media or Universal Transport Media.

Specimen source must be on order or requisition. 
DO NOT use wood-shafted or calcium alginate swabs.

Emergency authorization for collection of swabs in saline ends 12/4/23. Do not submit swabs collected in saline after this date.

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Specimen not properly labeled
  • Incorrect swab
  • Contaminated specimen
  • Improper storage conditions
  • Specimen submitted in fixative
  • Specimen source not nasopharygeal or nasal

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal: Deliver to lab immediately at ambient temperature.
Offsite: Transport to laboratory at 2-8°C.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Room Temperature: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 7 days
Frozen: unacceptable
