Collect

Container: Green top with gel (PST) (lithium heparin); Red w/gel (tiger top) or Gold SST; Pediatric PST (green top) or SST (gold top); Red top w/out gel

Minimum volume: 0.2 mL plasma/serum

Fill tubes completely. CO2 decreases of up to 3 mmol/L can be observed with partially filled tubes.
Blood collected during prolonged tourniquet use may have calcium concentrations 15% higher.

Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge specimens and remove the serum or plasma from the cellular material within 4 hours of collection.

Pediatric Collection

Container: Pediatric PST (green top) or SST (gold top)

Minimum volume: 0.5 mL whole blood

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Any hemolysis
  • Incorrect container
  • Sample not properly identified
  • Insufficient sample volume

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal: Deliver to lab immediately.
Offsite: Centrifuge within 30 minutes of collection and transport to lab at 2-8°C.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Room Temperature: 4 hours
Refrigerated: 3 days
Frozen: 1 month

Performed

Upon receipt

Remarks

Hemolyzed samples will cause a false elvation in potassium values. Lysis of only 0.5% of the erythrocytes can increase potassium levels by 0.5 mmol/L. In samples with gross hemolysis the potassium results may not be reported.
