Patient Instructions for Collecting a 24-Hour Urine
1. The Laboratory prepares a urine specimen collection container for the patient.
CAUTION: It may contain a preservative inside which can be harmful if spilled or swallowed. Do not touch or remove the contents of the container. Keep the container out of the reach of children.
2. Start the 24 -hour urine collection the day before you intend to bring the specimen back to the laboratory. Use the container we have provided because other containers are not suitable.
3. To begin your test, empty your bladder into the toilet when you get up in the morning. Do not save the first morning urine on this day. Remember the time you did this, and write this as the start-time directly onto the
collection container or onto the lab form.
4. For the next 24 hours, each time you urinate, you should collect all your urine in a clean collection cup or commode collection bowl. Then, carefully pour the urine into the 24-hour urine container that has been provided for you. Be sure to include all urine passed during the night.
5. The final urine collection should be the next morning urine; about the same time you started testing the day before. Be sure to save this morning collection and pour it into the 24-hour urine container. Write the time as the
stop-time directly onto the container or lab form.
6. It is important that you stay near the collection container and that you keep the container in the refrigerator or in a cooler on ice during the entire collection period.
