One 4 mL EDTA (Lavender) Tube

Pediatric Collection

Fill 1 lavender EDTA microtainer to the 500 uL line if possible.  You must immediately place blood into the microtainer and invert 10 times.  Absolute minimum is 250 uL.

Unacceptable Conditions

Frozen, clotted, Tube under filled, grossly hemolyzed, beyond specified stability

Storage/Transport Temperature

4 mL Whole Blood Refrigerated

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient: 12 hrs Refrigerated: 24 hrs

Send original Tube. CBC includes a WBC, RBC with Indices, HGB, HCT, Platelet count, and Differential. All requests for CBC will initially be evaluated using an automated differential. If results fall outside established parameters, a manual smear review will be performed. A pathology review will also be performed based on pre-defined criteria, or may be performed by request by ordering a 'SmearPath'.

Although not required, a properly prepared blood smear may be useful for specimens that will be more than 12 hours old when received at ALI.  See link below for instructions for blood smear preparation.
