Specimen Preparation, Storage/Transport Temperature:
Keep sample as ambient whole blood for delivery to our lab within 24 hours of collection. If delivery cannot occur within 24 hours, separate plasma from cells within 24 hours of collection. Freeze two 0.5mL plasma aliquots immediately at -20°C or lower. Separated plasma samples must be sent with enough dry ice to maintain a frozen state until received in our lab.
The lab operates Mon-Fri, 8:00am to 5:00pm (EST). Testing is not performed and samples cannot be received on weekends/certain holidays. First Overnight shipping is strongly recommended. Please call/fax (513-636-4685/513-636-3861) the tracking number so we may better track your specimen.
Values of IL-6 measured with the chemiluminescent immunometric method generally run two fold lower than when measured with the multiplex magnetic bead method (See CLI test# 2902300).
Anti-IL-6 receptor monoclonal antibodies (e.g., sarilumab, tocilizumab) and anti-IL-6 monoclonal antibodies (e.g., siltuximab) alter measurement of IL-6.
Tocilizumab treatment is known to result in accumulation of plasma IL-6. Nishimoto N et al., Blood. 2008 Nov 15: 112(10): 3959-3964.
