Collection personnel MUST initial specimen container to confirm sample identity.
Minimum Collection Volume
25 mg of chorionic villi or other tissue in sterile culture medium is needed for 14 day turn around time (TAT).
or
1cm x 1cm or 2 mm punch biopsy in sterile culture medium.
If a lesser volume of chorionic villi or tissue is sent, the laboratory will attempt to perform the test requested. The laboratory cannot assure either a result and/or the ability to perform repeat testing and/or additional testing if the minimum volumes are not met.

Label tubes with patient name and date of birth (DOB).
Patient Preparation
For products of conception (POC) the preferred tissue is chorionic villi. If fetal tissue is sent, please ALSO send chorionic villi, if available.

DO NOT USE FORMALIN, the tissue must be fresh and sterile in order to obtain cell growth.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Store at room temperature (if storing overnight, please REFRIGERATE) / Use overnight shipping (protect from temperature extremes, no ice) or call the lab for local courier service (contact laboratory prior to drawing specimen to ensure courier area coverage).

Unacceptable Conditions
Specimen placed in formalin or non-sterile container.
Maternal decidua only in a POC sample. If no fetal tissue is found upon initial specimen examination by laboratory staff, the ordering physician will be called. The decision whether or not to proceed with testing can be made at that time.
