1.0 mL Plasma or Serum (Plasma is preferred)

3 mL blood in Dark Green (Sodium Heparin)
               or
3 mL blood in Red or Gold tubes

Unacceptable Conditions

Unacceptable transportation temperature, tubes with EDTA, whole blood more than 24 hours old, grossly hemolyzed samples, frozen whole blood

Storage/Transport Temperature

Main Lab Processing to Oak:  FROZEN plasma or serum on dry ice

For outside providers ad researchers:  FROZEN plasma or serum on dry ice (not whole blood). :
     Ship Monday - Thursday only

Specimen Preparation

CCHMC Outpatient Lab:  Transport centrifiged, unopened, refrigerated Lithium Heparin plasma or Sodium Heparin whole blood within 24 hours to CCHMC Processing Department.

Lab Processing Instructions:  Blood should be centrifuged and separated from cells immediately after receipt if not already centrifuged. Transfer plasma or serum into a polypropylene tube, then cap and immediately freeze at -80 C.
