Acceptable Specimen Collect Alternatives

Specimen may be inoculated on culture media directly by clinician:

  • Acceptable media- Eye sites such as Cornea, Conjunctival, Vitreous fluid--inoculate eSwab collection and transport media, only.

Body Fluids other than CSF-transfer directly to Anaerobic Purple top bottles - purple label collection bottle (See below)

Stability (from collection to initiation)

  • Deliver all specimens to the Clinical Laboratory ASAP after collection
  • STAT Courier delivery may be required
  • Transport specimens at ambient temperature (Refrigerated or Frozen is Unacceptable)
  • Call the Diagnostic Infectious Diseases Testing Laboratory at 513-636-8144 with questions regarding transport
Extended storage of the specimen in the lab post-analytical:
  • Ambient:  N/A
  • Refrigerated:  7 days (fluids in sterile containers only; swab specimens and fluids in blood culture bottles are NOT saved)
  • Frozen:  N/A

Notes

Gram stain is performed on aerobic bacteria culture specimen.

Specimen Preparation

Swabs must be submitted in Copan Liquid Amies Collection and Transport System. 

Call Diagnostic Infectious Diseases Testing Laboratory 513-636-8144 for Eye Specimen thiogyolate broth.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Avoid extreme heat or cold temperatures

Ambient-storage and transport

Avoid aerobic conditions (exposure to oxygen)

Anaerobic swabs must be delivered to the lab within 4 hours of collection.
