Stool collected in Preservative Collection Vial Set: Room Temp 30 days. Refrigerated 30 days. Frozen is Unacceptable.
Fresh stool: Room Temp 1 day

Notes

Not recommended for patients who have been hospitalized for >3 days. Do not use antacids, barium, bismuth, antidiarrheal medication, or oily laxatives prior to collection of specimen.

Three stool samples collected on alternate days over a 7 day period is recommended.

If specimen other than stool collected, please call the Send Out Lab 513-636-3061 for collection requirements.

Submission of only one vial will result in in specimen rejection. 

Stool specimen containing barium salts, oil, or urine

Stool from patients after 3 days of hospitalization

Rectal swabs

Remarks

This test does not detect Cryptosporidium. For most patients, an O&P DFA is the preferred test.
