Ordering Recommendations
CMV infection remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in both solid organ transplant patients and bone marrow transplant patients. The diagnostic challenge with CMV disease is to distinguish asymptomatic latent or low level persistent infectionfrom clinically significant disease. The use of plasma as a sample type may provide a better correlation with clinical disease than detection of CMV DNA from whole blood or leukocytes because it measures CMV DNA circulating in the blood stream which is adirect result of active viral replication rather than the latent intracellular CMV DNA. The Indiana University Health Molecular Pathology Laboratory has standardized to the International Standard with determining the conversion factor from copies/mL toIU/mL to be 1.41.

Assay Limitation(s)
Negative test results do not preclude CMV infection or tissue-invasive CMV disease, and test results should therefore not be the sole basis for patient management decisions.
