Gastric or Duodenal Tissue/Biopsy for Helicobacter pylori: H. pylori testing may be reordered as Anaerobe CX by Microbiology lab once specimen is received. If submitted in leak-proof sterile container or Stuart's storage media, must be received in lab within 3 hours of collection at ambient temperature.
If submitted in Brucella broth (20% glycerol, cysteine-albumin broth) or liquid Cary-Blair medium, must be received within 24 hours of collection at ambient temperature.

Please note that this is NOT for a biopsy for surgical pathology (See Surgical Pathology Specimen). Source of specimen should be stated. Submit tissue on sterile gauze moistened with sterile saline for Biopsy CX (if tissue is to be screened for H. pylori, do not add fluid). If submitting tissue/biopsy for H. pylori, please notify Microbiology Laboratory in advance (317) 491-6999. Thio broth should be submitted for FNA specimens.

Ordering Recommendations

A Biopsy CX + Stn (culture and stain) includes both a bacterial culture and a microscopic examination of a Gram-stained smear. All microorganisms that grow in the culture are definitively identified. Antibiotic susceptibility testing is performed on potential bacterial pathogens. Bone infections, or osteomyelitis, may be caused by organisms in the blood or by contact with infections in adjacent tissues. This test is ordered to identify microorganisms causing osteomyelitis, when there is suspicion that an infectious organism is present in a site sampled by fine needle aspiration, tissue or 'other' type of samples.
