Collection Comments

Fasting, resting patient. Inpatient - On ice,deliver immediately. Spin and separate within 15 min if from an outlying site and send refrigerated plasma. Based on a request from the IU Health Sepsis Committee, there is a reflex rule in Cerner that willorder a second Lactate to be drawn 2 hours in the future when an initial Lactate result is > 2 mmol/L. This reflex rule satisfies CMS Guidelines for Sepsis Quality.

Ordering Recommendations

Lactate/lactic acid is a product of anerobic metabolism of glucose. The arterial lactate test is ordered when there is a suspicion of hypoxia, lactic acidosis from an acute or chronic process, liver or kidney disease. Based on a request from the IU Health Sepsis Committee, there is a reflex rule in Cerner that will order a second Lactate to be drawn 2 hours in the future when an initial Lactate result is > 2 mmol/L. This reflex rule satisfies CMS Guidelines for Sepsis Quality.
