Collect

Blood, Grey

Preferred Draw Volume

3 mL

Minimum Draw Volume

0.2 mL

Unacceptable Conditions

Avoid hemolysis

Collection Comments

The patient should be at rest before taking a blood sample in order to avoid any increase in lactate concentration from glycolysis resulting from physical exercise. In particular, movement of the hand or arm should be avoided. Client, Spin and separate within 15 min and send refrigerated plasma. Inpatient - On ice, deliver immediately. Based on a request from the IU Health Sepsis Committee, there is a reflex rule in Cerner that will order a second Lactate to be drawn 2 hours in the future when an initial Lactate result is > 2 mmol/L. This reflex rule satisfies CMS Guidelines for Sepsis Quality.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated plasma

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Spun samples: Room Temperature: 8 hours: Refrigerated: 14 days

Ordering Recommendations

Lactate/lactic acid is a product of anerobic metabolism of glucose. The venous lactate test is ordered when there is a suspicion of hypoxia, lactic acidosis from an acute or chronic process, liver or kidney disease.
