Test Information

This test is available for IUH Ball Memorial Hospital and M3E (Methodist) Lab only.

Collect

Blood, Light Blue

Preferred Draw Volume

2.7 mL x2

Minimum Draw Volume

1 Full tube

Unacceptable Conditions

Samples >4 hours old, clotted samples, under or over filled tubes, or gross hemolysis.
Samples that are frozen, on ice, or refrigerated.
Samples sent via the pneumatic tube system (Ball hospital only).

Collection Comments

Hand deliver to the lab (Ball hospital only).
Collect using a 21 gauge needle. (Under no circumstances should a smaller gauge needle be used.) Draw a discard tube to clear the needle and tubing of tissue thromboplastin and to ensure a free flowing sample. Discard tube must be a tube with no additive, a light blue marked as discard, or a discard syringe of 3-5 mL. Collect 2 light blue, 3.2% Sodium Citrate, tubes by filling completely by vacuum. If drawing through a line, use non-heparinized syringes to clear 3X's the dead space (about 10mL). Collect 2 light blue tubes by safe transfer device or by using a new non-heparinized syringe. Mix tubes gently by inverting 5-7 times. Properly label samples with a patient label and date/time collected. Keep specimens at room temperature only.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Room Temperature

Stability (from collection to initiation)

4 hours post collection

Special Handling

Do not tube specimen, hand deliver to Blood Bank

Ordering Recommendations

Used to determine patient hemostasis throughout cardiovascular procedure and to help assist with blood product usage determination.

Performed

Monday - Sunday

Methodology

The TEG6S measures clot viscoelasticity throughout the coagulation process by using resonance technology, exposing the blood sample to a fixed vibration frequency. Using LED illumination, an infrared detector measures vertical motion of the coagulating blood meniscus.

Performing Lab

IUH Ball Blood Bank and M3E (Methodist) Lab

Synonyms

  • TEG6S Global Heamostasis
