Collection Comments
Collect CSF fluid into a labeled, sterile screw top tube.
Number all tubes and identify tube number (e.g. Tube #1, #2, #3, etc).
Place all specimens in biohazard bag before sending to the laboratory.
Do not freeze. Cytology cannot be performed with a frozen specimen.
***Note: IU Health Cytology will process specimens from patients with known or suspected Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease ( CJD). Please flag the specimen with this warning and this information must be noted in comments.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Refrigerate specimen
Cells may rapidly degenerate rendering morphologic evaluation less than optimal without prompt refrigeration and adequate handling (please do not freeze).
Ordering Recommendations
Cytologic examination of CSF can be used to verify the presence of central nervous system metastasis, primary CNS malignancies and various inflammatory diseases.
Please give patient history under comments section. (e.g., history of lymphoma, etc.)
**Please note suspected Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). On specimen bag(s) and in the ordering notes.
A pathology report will be rendered after microscopic review.
