Specimen Types:
Esophageal and GI junction brushings
Gastric brushings
Duodenum brushings
Bile duct brushing and fluid
Pancreatic brushings
Liver hilum brushings
Containers:
SurePath Vial
CytoRich fixative in tube
Preferred Draw Volume
The adequacy of a gastrointestinal specimen is determined primarily by the presence of well-preserved epithelial cells indicative of the type of epithelium present at the gastrointestinal site sampled.
Unacceptable Conditions
Unlabeled specimens
No specimen source given
Leaking container
Collection Comments
Indicate clinical history and reason for the test on the requisition under comments section.
Cerner order: Type “Brushing“ or “Washing” under specimen type. Options will be available to choose in the drop -down menu. In the comments section add the specimen source.
Additional information may be given in the comments tab related to the specimen.
Submitting personnel must verify source by writing on Cerner label and providing signature.
Brushings:
Upon withdrawing the brush after sampling the suspected area, agitate the brush vigorously in a 50 mL centrifuge tube/container containing 30 mL of CytoRich cytologic fixative or a SurePath fixative container. Cut or detach the brush into the container of fixative in the wide mouth opening. Tightly cap the specimen container and place along with a completed requisition in a sealable biohazard bag before sending to Cytology. Containers must be labeled with the patient’s name, medical record number and the sample site.
Washings:
Endoscopically obtain washing (preferably at least 10 mL) of the region of the suspected lesion: Using standard endoscopy technique, lavage the area of interest using a physiologic solution. Aspirate the solution and place in a clean sterile specimen container. Containers must be labeled with the patient’s name, medical record number and the sample site.
Bile Duct:
Using appropriate sterile technique, collect as much bile drainage through the drainage apparatus as possible into a sterile plastic specimen container, or add it to a tube/container containing 30 mL CytoRich. Tightly cap the specimen container. Containers must be labeled with the patient’s name, medical record number and the sample site.
Cytogenetics specimens may accompany brushings of this type.
Questions regarding that process and collection containers that are suitable should be directed to 317-274-2243.
