Collection Comments

Cerner order: Type “ URN “ under specimen type. Options will be available to choose in the drop -down menu. In the comments section add in specimen source.
Submitting personnel must verify source by writing on Cerner label and providing signature.

Voided Urine:
For purposes of obtaining the greatest yield of diagnostic material, a second-morning voided urine specimen should be obtained if possible. A midstream, clean-catch specimen is recommended to avoid vaginal contamination in female patients. A midstream specimen, not necessarily clean catch, is recommended for male patients.
  • Do not collect first urine of the morning
  • Do not collect 24-hour urine sample
  • Refrigerate after collection if immediate delivery is not possible
Catherized Urine:
If the patient must be catheterized to obtain the specimen, note this on the submission, as catheterization can lead to artifacts that may be misinterpreted if it’s not known that the specimen was catheterized.

Ileal Conduit Urine:
Please note “Ileal conduit urine” in comments or on the order.

Washing/brushing, ureteral washing/brushing, or urethral washing:
Using standard cystoscopy technique, obtain washing specimens, denoting specific specimen sites for each specimen.  For brushings, identify the lesion in question and obtain a brushing sample. Upon withdrawing the brush, agitate the brush vigorously into the vial of CytoRich fixative solution. Clip the brush into the tube/vial.  Label the tube with patient identification and site of brushing.

Other urologic specimens obtained cystoscopically:
Please note in comments or on the order (i.e. bladder washing, renal pelvis washing, renal pelvis brushing, etc.)

Storage/Transport Temperature

After collection, tightly cap the container and place in biohazard bag with ice.

Urine can be evaluated for the presence of malignant cells. Urinary tract specimens may also be evaluated cytologically for the detection and characterization of some renal diseases. Method of specimen collection, as well as time of collection, can affect the cytologic evaluation process.
