Using standard vitreous collection procedures, collect an appropriate amount of vitreous fluid. There is no minimum amount but collect as much as possible.
Unacceptable Conditions
No source and laterality indicated
No patient identification
Frozen specimen
Collection Comments
Specimen should be submitted in the fresh state – after collection, remove needle and tightly cap the syringe and keep it in the refrigerator until it is delivered. Label syringe with unique patient identifier and specimen source. Place in biohazard bag for transport.
Collections may include separate saline-diluted specimen. Label sterile bag with unique patient identifier and specimen source. Place in biohazard bag for transport.
Cerner order: Type “FLD “under specimen type. Vitreous fluid and laterality options will be available to choose in the drop -down menu. In the comments section add in specimen source.
A Cerner generated requisition or a manual requisition MUST accompany the specimen/ specimens to the Pathology Lab for testing.
Submitting personnel must verify source by writing on Cerner label and providing signature.
Flow cytometry specimen should be collected and submitted separately to the flow cytometry laboratory.
Stability (from collection to initiation)
Fresh specimen in capped syringe/or sterile vacutainer: refrigerated, or on ice.
Ordering Recommendations
Cytologic evaluation of vitreous fluid is most used to detect and characterize malignancy that may have gained access to the eye. Vitreous fluid specimens require special collection procedures under the direction of an ophthalmologist. In addition, due to lack of nutrients in this fluid, cells may rapidly degenerate, rendering morphologic evaluation less than optimal if adequate care is not taken.
Cytogenetic studies will be performed on a cell block created from the specimen when adequate cellularity available. Desire for cytogenetics studies should be explicit on requisition. Contact cytogenetics for any questions: 317-274-2243.
