COLLECTION INSTRUCTIONS:

Dermatophyte-Skin:

Clean skin with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Collect skin scrapings at the advancing margin of lesion using blunt end of scalpel blade or edge of glass slide and collecting the scrapings on a piece of clean paper (preferably colored paper). Fold the paper to contain the scrapings and secure with a paper clip or in a clean envelope, and then place the paper into a blue capped sterile container. DO NOT send the scalpel blade or glass slide with the scrapings. NOTE: Swab collection generally not recommended unless collecting moist lesion; never moisten a swab with tap water - use sterile water or saline instead. Direct smear (KOH Prep) not included and must be ordered separately (KOHP). KOH prep cannot be performed on swab specimens. Alternative collection method for skin and hair/scalp utilizes the sterile, disposable toothbrush scrub technique.

Dermatophyte-Nail:

Clean nail with 70% isopropyl alcohol. For a specimen of the dorsal plate, scrape the outer surface and discard the scrapings. Then scrape the deeper portion for a specimen. Remove a portion of debris from under the nail with a scalpel. Collect the whole nail or nail clippings. Place all material in a folded piece of paper (colored is preferable) secured with a paper clip or in a clean envelope and place directly in a blue capped sterile container. DO NOT send the scalpel blade with the nail scrapings. Direct smear (KOH Prep) not included and must be ordered separately (KOHP).?KOH prep cannot be performed on swab specimens. NOTE: Swab collection generally not recommended unless collecting moist lesion; never moisten a swab with tap water use sterile water or saline instead.

Dermatophyte-Hair/Scalp:

Collect scalp specimens by plucking hair shafts (cut hair not acceptable) and also include scrapings at the base of the lesion. Submit in folded paper as above for skin into blue capped sterile container. NOTE: Swab collection generally not recommended unless collecting moist lesion; never moisten a swab with tap water - use sterile water or saline instead. Direct smear (KOH Prep) not included and must be ordered separately (KOHP). KOH prep cannot be performed on swab specimens.
