Collect

EDTA lavender tubes or PPT (pearl top)

Minimum volume 350 ul plasma.

Unacceptable Conditions

Microtainers are not advised

Storage/Transport Temperature

Whole blood collected in BD Vacutainer PPT Plasma Preparation Tubes for Molecular Diagnostic Test Methods or in sterile tubes using EDTA as the anticoagulant; may be stored and/or transported for up to 24 hours at
2-25°C prior to plasma preparation.

Upon separation, store plasma samples as follows:
  • Storage in primary (if PPT) or secondary tubes for up to 6 days at 2-8°C.
  • Storage in secondary tubes for up to 6 months at -15°C to -80°C.
  • Plasma samples are stable for up to four freeze/thaw cycles when frozen at -15°C to -80°C.
  • If samples are to be shipped, package and label in compliance with applicable country and/or international regulations covering the transport of samples and etiologic agents.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Whole blood - 24 hours
Plasma - 6 days at 2-8°C

Performed

Microbiology - Molecular Virology, Monday - Friday

Remarks

This assay is intended for use as an aid in the management of BKV in transplant patients.  In patients undergoing monitoring of BKV in EDTA plasma, serial DNA measurements can be used to indicate the need for potential treatment changes and to assess viral response to treatment.

Performed

Microbiology - Molecular Virology, Monday - Friday

Methodology

Direct detection of BKV DNA by real-time PCR

Reported

Specimen must be received in Microbiology Lab by 0900 to be run the same day

Reference Interval

Not detected

Interpretive Data

The quantitative range for this assay is 21.5 IU/mL - 1.0E+08 IU/mL
