Patient Preparation

A clean catch or midstream voided specimen, straight catheter, cytoscopic or suprapubic urine in a sterile collection container is preferable. Prior to collection, the external genitalia are thouroghly cleansed with a mild antiseptic solution. During the collection the initial portion of the urine stream is allowed to escape while the midstream portion is collected into a sterile container.

An unsterile-random void urine is acceptable for urinalysis examination but does not meet collection requirements for urine cultures.

Collect

10 mL random urine collection.
Clean container, no preservative.

Please note the collection mode on the container.

Indicate clearly on the test request form if a Urine Culture is ordered at the same time.

Specimen Preparation

Transport specimen to the lab within 2 hours of collection or refrigerate.

The specimen must be received in the lab within 24 hours of collection.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens >24 hours.

Specimens collected in Vacutainer brand urine collection tubes.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Transfer urine to laboratory within 2 hours of collection.

  Room temperature for 2 hours

  Refrigerator temperature for 24 hours

Performed

Chemistry/Urinalysis
Daily, routine and STAT.

Remarks

Microscopic analysis of the urine is performed only when specifically ordered or when the appearance of the urine is cloudy or any of the results of the blood (above a trace), protein (above a trace), nitrite or leukocytes tests on the macroscopic analysis are positive.

Notes

Results include color, appearance, specific gravity, pH, protein, glucose, urobilinogen, ketones, bilirubin, blood, nitrite, leukocyte esterase, microscopic exam (WBC, RBC, epithelial cells, bacteria, casts, crystals).
