Patient Preparation

No fasting or special diets are required. Presence of barium will give elevated values. Diet, medication and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Patients should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals and non-essential over-the-counter medications (upon the advice of their physician).

Collect

**Draw blood using metal free materials, syringe, test tube and stopper.**

Royal Blue tube (no additive)- 

  • Allow blood to clot for 30 – 40 minutes, but not longer than 60 minutes.
  • Centrifuge for 10 minutes at 2400 rpm.
  • Pour the serum into polyethylene tubes or metal free tubes.
    • Optimum: 0.5 mL serum
    • Minimum: 0.2 mL serum

-or- 

Red top (acceptable due to nationwide shortage)

  • Centrifuge and separate from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection
  • Transfer 2mL serum or plasma to a metal free aliquot tube (RPS clients: TUBE107 on supply portal) 

Unacceptable Conditions

Patients that have recently had a procedure with involved barium intake are unacceptable.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Stability Conditions:  Ambient, refrigerated, or frozen specimens up to 28 days since collection.
