Stability (from collection to initiation)
Stable at room temperature for < 24 hours; refrigerated for up to 7 days.
Remarks
Unless patient is immunosuppressed or less than 2 years of age, it is strongly suggested that this test be ordered only if the CSF WBC is > 10 nucleated cells/µl.
Repeat testing is not recommended. Limit one test per inpatient stay.
Notes
If bacteria or yeast are Detected with this panel a CSF culture with smear, will automatically be performed. Due to the sensitivity of the panel, it is possible the organism may not be isolated.
Requests for viral culture testing will be performed using the Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel.
