Collect

Collect about 2.0 mL of blood into a red top tube from a peripheral venous stick or about 5.0 mL of blood into a red top tube from an indwelling catheter. Next draw 2.0 mL blood in 2 light blue-top Greiner Vaccuette tubes (3.2% sodium citrate) available from Hematology Lab.  Each of the Greiner tubes must be filled to its correct capacity indicated by  a small black triangle with upper and lower limits.  (Please click here to see a  picture of the black triangle and its limits on the Greiner tube:  http://www.pathology.uci.edu/services/images/fillvolume.jpg) Light Blue top BD tubes are NOT acceptable.

Specimen Required

One red top tube with at least 2.0 ml of blood 2.0 mL blood in 2 light blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) Greiner tubes. Light Blue top BD tubes are NOT acceptable.

Unacceptable Conditions

SPECIMENS COLLECTED IN GLASS TUBES or BD LIGHT BLUE TOP TUBES, specimens that exceed stated stability, unlabeled/mislabeled/mismatched specimens, specimens submitted in leaking containers, clotted, hemolyzed over-filled or under-filled tubes

Special Instructions

Call Hematology at 714-456-5090 for special handling instructions and special collection tubes for this test. A clean venipuncture is essential to avoid specimen activation.  The correct ratio of blood to anticoagulant (9:1) is critical . If the tubes are under-filled or over-filled, specimen must be recollected as results will not be accurate. Do not collect specimen in glass tubes
