Ordering Recommendations

  1. Specimen source is required to be included as part of the order in EPIC or on the manual requisition.
  2. Indicate if Malassezia furfur is suspected. Special growth conditions are required for the cultivation of this yeast.
  3. If Histoplasma, Coccidioides, or Blastomyces is suspected, notify the laboratory.
  4. There are other related fungal tests available for ordering. Order test according to source type:
  • Blood/Bone Marrow: Fungal Blood Culture (CXAFF, CXFBM)
  • Oral, Vaginal, Urine: Yeast Culture (CXYST)
  • Skin, Hair and Nails: Fungal Culture, KOH (CXFNS, KOHSH)
  • All Other Sources: Fungal Culture (CXFUN)
  • Rule-Out C. auris: Candida auris PCR (CANAT)

Tests Included

  1. Results include colony prevalence of yeast and molds
  2. Identification will be performed for significant isolates
  3. Limited yeast identification will be performed for non-sterile sites
  4. Susceptibilities are not routinely performed, but can be requested
  • First Cryptococcal and Candida isolates from CSF will have susceptibilities performed
  1. Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture

Methodology

Standard reference procedures for culture and identification of fungal microorganisms

Reported

Preliminary: No fungal growth to date
  • 1 - 2 Weeks: Cultures are examined daily
  • 3 - 4 Weeks: Cultures are examined at least once a week
Final (Negative): 28 days

Positives: Results are reported as soon as detected. Susceptibilities are not routinely performed.
