Preferred: 2-5 mL CSF (Tube #2, shunt, or ventricular fluid) in a Sterile Container.
Minimum volume: 1 mL CSF (contact lab if less).

Specimen Preparation

If CSF if from a shunt, please indicate this.

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Sample submitted in preservative or media.
  • Sample not properly identified, incorrect container, insufficient volume, or past stability.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal: ASAP* ambient
Offsite: Transport ASAP.* Ambient preferred.

*Delay in transport may result in overgrowth of contaminating flora.

Refrigerated: Refrigeration may compromise the recovery of fastidious organisms

Remarks

  • This test is for routine anaerobic culture on CSF only (includes a gram stain; sensitivity will be added when needed.).
    • For CSF aerobic, order LAB268 CSF Aerobic Culture.
    • Fungal and AFB cultures will be done only on abnormal CSF. These tests must be ordered separately.
  • CSF gram stains will be examined within 1 hour if marked STAT or within 2 hours if routine.
  • Cultures are held for up to 14 days.
