Collect

Preferred: Stool in Cary Blair Kit (dark green vial and white cap vial).
Acceptable: Stool in Sterile Container, Cardinal Health C&S (orange cap vial) (with disclaimer), or COPAN FecalSwab®.
Minimum volume: 0.5 mL of raw or preserved stool.

Patient Preparation

Specimens containing interfering substances (e.g., castor oil, bismuth, barium, etc.) may not have optimal yield for culture.

Specimen Preparation

Fresh stool added to Cary Blair Transport Kit (dark green & white caps) filled to the fill lines on the labels.

Outpatient Collection Note: Raw stool is only stable for 24 hours refrigerated. Stool received in appropriately-filled Cary Blair Transport Media is stable for 3 days.

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Stool contaminated with urine.
  • Stool in diapers, tissue paper, or homemade containers.
  • Rectal swabs.
  • Frozen stool.
  • Cardinal Health Enteric Stool Transport Vial (lime green capped vial).
  • Stool not preserved in Cary Blair within 24 hours of collection.
  • Over- or under-filled Cary Blair submitted without at least 0.5 mL of stool in a non-additive, sterile container.
  • Samples from patients who have had a GI PCR <7 days ago.
  • Samples from hospitalized patients admitted >3 days.
  • Sample not properly identified, incorrect container, insufficient volume, or past stability.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Release and transport orders/labels for “UHGIPCR” and “GIPCRCULT” together.

Internal: Deliver to lab immediately at ambient temperature.
Offsite: Stabilize and/or send to lab ASAP refrigerated.

Performed

Daily

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Room Temp/Refrigerated: 3 days in appropriately-filled Cary Blair (dark green vial); 24 hours in non-additive, Sterile Container (white cap vial).

Interpretive Data

Interpretation:
Not detected = Negative, the virus or bacteria indicated was not detected.
Detected = Positive, the virus or bacteria indicated was detected.

Methodology:
This test employs multiplex PCR amplification of viral and bacterial-specific conserved genetic targets. A positive result for this assay should be coupled with clinical indicators for diagnosis.  A "Not detected" result for this assay does not exclude involvement of the tested viruses or bacteria in a disease process. This test has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for testing stool specimens in Cary-Blair media. This test is used for clinical purposes. It should not be regarded as investigational or for research. This laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 ("CLIA") as qualified to perform high complexity clinical testing.
