3 mL Serum or Plasma, gold (SST) or green (PPT) top tube
Minimum volume: 0.2 mL
Storage/Transport Temperature
Room Temperature
Stability (from collection to initiation)
HUP
Room Temp: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 7 days at 2-8C
PAH
RT 24hrs, 2-8C 7days
Unacceptable Conditions
Gross hemolysis
Processing - HUP
Load the specimen in the automated track. If the specimen has to be manually centrifuged, spin the tube for 7-10 minutes at 1000-1300 X G. Ensure proper separation.
Processing - PAH
Spin 7-10 minutes at 3500 rpms. Bring specimen to Chemistry
Reference Interval
0.00-0.27 mmol/L
Clinical Significance
beta-Hydroxybutyrate, as well as blood glucose determination in diabetics, is used to evaluate the severity of diabetic coma and is essential in the exclusion of hyperosmolar non-ketotic diabetic coma. Moreover, the insulin requirement is often based on the extent of the existing hyperketonemia shown by the blood levels of beta-Hydroxybutyrate, and is therefore extremely important in assessment of ketosis.
