Collection Container

Collect

1 ml of serum, Serum Separator Tube
Also acceptable: heparinized plasma, green (sodium or lithium heparin) top tube

Pediatric Collection

 1 Green Microtainer

Storage/Transport Temperature

Room Temperature

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Separated serum or plasma should not remain at room temperature longer than 8 hours. If assays are not completed within 8 hours, serum or plasma should be stored at 2 °C to 8 °C for 12 hours.

Unacceptable Conditions

Hemolyzed specimens

Processing - HUP

Load specimen in the automated track. If manually processing, spin the tube for 7-10 minutes at 1000-1300 X G. Ensure proper separation.

Processing - PAH

Spin 7-10 minutes at 3500 rpms. Bring specimen to Chemistry. Neonates spin specimens 5000 rpms in Micro Centrifuge for 7-10 minutes.

Reference Interval

Male 0-150 years: 49-397 IU/L
Female 0-150 years: 38-234 IU/L

Clinical Significance

Measurements of Creatine Kinase are used in the diagnosis and treatment of myocardial infarction and muscle disease, such as progressive Duchenne-type muscular dystrophy.
