Preferred test for detecting Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in various specimens.

Patient Preparation

First Catch Urine: Patient should not urinate for 1 hour prior to specimen collection.  Patient should not perform any cleaning prior to urination.

Preferred Source/Collection Device:  Vaginal/APTIMA MultiTest Swab Specimen Collection kit
Alternate Source/Collection Device:  First Catch "dirty" Urine <30mL in sterile cup
Gynecological Exam Source/Collection Device:  Cervical brush in ThinPrep Pap Collection kit
Male:
Preferred Source/Collection Device:  First Catch "dirty" Urine <30mL in sterile cup
Female/Male Also Acceptable:
Source/Collection Device: Cervical or male urethral/APTIMA Unisex Swab Specimen Collection kit
Non-urogenital Sites:
Preferred Source/Collection Device:  Throat, Anal/APTIMA MultiTest Swab Specimen Collection kit

Specimen Preparation

Swab: Place swab in Swab Specimen Transport Tube, break shaft off at scoreline then recap tube.
First Catch Urine: Maximum 30 mL urine in a sterile cup.
ThinPrep: Performed at Midtown Laboratory - Vortex ThinPrep PreservCyt solution and transfer 1 mL to an APTIMA Specimen Transfer Tube.
Performed at Midtown Microbiology Laboratory - Transfer 2mL urine within 24 hours to an APTIMA Urine Specimen Transport Tube.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Swab: Room temperature.
First Catch Urine/ThinPrep: Room temperature or Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens in any transport media other than indicated above.  
Specimen in swab transport media without a swab.  
Any swab not included in an APTIMA Collection kit.
Large white swab included in APTIMA Unisex Swab Specimen Collection kit is for preparatory cleaning of the endocervix and is unacceptable for testing.
