Isolate and identify Neisseria gonorrhoeae; establish the diagnosis of gonorrhea. 
Molecular testing is generally preferred for genital, urine, throat, and rectal specimens (refer to Chlamydia and GC (TMA) [LAB4054]).
For sterile body fluids refer to Wound & Anaerobe Culture (LAB4173).

Collect

Urethral cervical anorectal, throat or conjunctiva.

Swab: 
Preferred: Regular or Mini-tip  Eswab (1.0 mL Amies) [Cap color may vary]
Also acceptable:
Blue top swab (COPAN with gel)

Storage/Transport Temperature

Room temperature or refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions

Delayed transport (>24 hours). Dry swab. Swab in molecular testing transport media. Swab in UTM.

  • Frozen: Unacceptable
