Patient Preparation

First Catch Urine: Patient should not urinate for 1 hour prior to specimen collection.  Patient should not perform any cleaning prior to urination.

Alternate Source/Collection Device:  First Catch "dirty" Urine <30mL in sterile cup
Gynecological Exam Source/Collection Device:  Cervical brush in ThinPrep Pap Collection kit

Preferred Source/Collection Device:  First Catch "dirty" Urine <30mL in sterile cup
Female/Male Also Acceptable:

Specimen Preparation

Swab: Place swab in Swab Specimen Transport Tube, break shaft off at scoreline then recap tube.
First Catch Urine: Maximum 30 mL of urine in a sterile cup.
ThinPrep: Performed at Midtown laboratory: Vortex ThinPrep PreservCyt solution and transfer 1 mL to an APTIMA Specimen Transfer Tube.
Performed at Midtown Microbiology laboratory - Transfer 2 mL urine within 24 hours to an APTIMA Urine Specimen Transport Tube.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Swab: Room temperature.
First Catch Urine/Thin Prep: Room temperature or Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens in any transport media other than indicated above.  
Specimen in swab transport media without a swab.  
Any swab not included in an APTIMA Collection kit.
Large white swab included in APTIMA Unisex Swab Specimen Collection kit is for preparatory cleaning of the endocervix and is unacceptable for testing.
