Ordering Recommendations

Detect early kidney disease in those with diabetes or other risk factors (eg, hypertension).

Collect

24-hour urine. Refrigerate during collection. Also acceptable: Random or other timed urine.

Specimen Preparation

Transfer 1 mL aliquot of urine from a well-mixed collection to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL) Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and test request form.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 1 month; Frozen: 6 months (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)

Notes

To convert from mg/g creatinine to mg/mmol of creatinine multiply by 0.113.

Interpretive Data

Per 24h calculations are provided to aid interpretation for collections with a duration of 24 hours and an average daily urine volume.  For specimens with notable deviations in collection time or volume, ratios of analytes to a corresponding urine creatinine concentration may assist in result interpretation.
