Ordering Instructions

This order includes a CBC with platelets and differential, reticulocyte count and blood morphology pathologist review. Order a parasite stain (LAB3697) if looking for anaplasma, babesia, ehrlichia or malaria.

Special Instructions

Provide patient's age, pertinent history and requesting staff physician on request form.

Test Includes

Examination of Wright-Giemsa stained peripheral blood smear by pathologist with professional interpretive report. A CBC, differential and reticulocyte count are performed by Automated Hematology at the collection site's laboratory in conjunction with the slide preparation (see processing instructions).

Turnaround Time

Performed Mon-Fri, 0730-1600; results are available in 24 hours. Outside of these hours, the on-call hematopathology fellow may be paged for preliminary interpretation.

Use

Evaluation of patients with suspected disorders of the hematopoietic system including all forms of leukemia, anemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Immediately mix specimen 10 times by gentle inversion.

Collection Volume

2-3 mL EDTA tube or 0.5 mL in an EDTA microtainer (do not fill more than 0.5 mL)

Minimum Collection Volume

1 mL EDTA tube or 0.3 mL in an EDTA microtainer.

Specimen Preparation

Prepare 4 unstained blood smears within 4 hours of specimen collection.

Unacceptable Conditions

Clotted specimen. Blood smears must be made within 4 hours of collection.

Shipping Instructions

Ship slides in protective slide holder at room temperature. Ship EDTA blood at refrigerated temperature.
