Collection Comments
Patient Preparation: Preferably patient should fast for 12 hours and abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection. If patient did not fast, please note in order comment.
Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angleto separate cells from serum. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date. Serum must be transfered to an aliquot tube. Process within 1 hour of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum (Minimum 0.2 mL) to properly labeled aliquot tube and refrigerate.
Serum retinol is typically maintained until hepatic stores are almost depleted. Values greater than 0.30 mg/L represent adequate liver stores, whereas values less than 0.10 mg/L indicate deficiency. Samples that come in contact with plastic tubing or have been exposed to excessive light may show low results.
