Hemolysis and/or plasma samples. Avoid lipemic samples and samples with repeat thaw exposure.
Collection Comments
Process within 2 hours of collection. Fasting patient preferred. Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angle to separate cells from serum. Refrigerate spuntube. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date. Serum from Red tube must be transfered to an aliquot tube.
The serum free light chain test consists of measurements of the kappa and lambda light chains and calculation of the kappa / lambda free light chain ratio. This test is ordered when there is a suspicion of smoldering or active multiple myeloma, MGUS, plasmacytoma or amyloidosis. The free light chain test is also used to assess therapy for patients known to have one of these plasma cell malignancies.
