Collection Comments

Fasting patient is preferred but not required. Process within 2 hrs of collection. Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angle to separate cells from serum. Refrigerate spun tube. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date.

Spun sample: Room Temperature: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 72 hours; Frozen: > 72 hours

Ordering Recommendations

Immunoglobulin M, or IgM, are antibodies that are part of the initial immune response; IgM is typically the first immunoglobulin to appear following antigen exposure. The IgM test is most frequently ordered when a plasma cell cancer is suspected or in the evaluation of immune function. IgM is included in the immunoglobulin panel or it may be requested individually.
