Blood, Gold

Preferred Draw Volume

3.5 mL

Minimum Draw Volume

2 mL

Pediatric Collection

2 microtainers

Unacceptable Conditions

No plasma

Collection Comments

Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angle to separate cells from serum. Refrigerate spun tube. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated serum

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Spun sample: Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 6 months

Ordering Recommendations

The protein electrophoresis test is used to separate and visualize the serum proteins based on each molecules net charge. Typically, the serum protein electrophoresis test is ordered as the screening test for monoclonal bands, with the serum IFE test ordered for confirmation. This test will not reflex to immunofixation upon pathologists interpretation. Order Protein Elp Ser IFE Rflx if reflex to IFE is desired.
