Must provide collection DATE and TIME. Optimal miminum volume is 1 mL. Due to the invasive nature of the procedure, it is required that a report of analysis of the fluid be issued even when the specimen is of marginal quality &/or time stability. Appropriate explanatory/qualifying comments are to be added to the report. Confirmation testing and pathologists reveiw will be performed in the presence of organisms and/or crystals or > 10 WBC/cumm.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Room temp Only
Stability (from collection to initiation)
Time Sensitive. Perform cell count within 2 hours of receipt.
Ordering Recommendations
The CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) cell count measures the number of erythrocytes (red blood cells, RBC) and leukocytes (white blood cells, WBC) in the CSF. When a large number of nucleated cells are present in the fluid a differential will also be reported.Normally CSF is a clear fluid with scant cellularity; CSF circulates in the space surrounding the spinal cord and brain. Whenever cerebrospinal fluid is obtained for diagnostic purposes a CSF cell count is typically ordered. This test is especially useful when the physician suspects a central nervous system infection.
