Collection Comments

BOTH serum and CSF are required. Collect 1 mL Gold minimum, 0.5 mL serum or 2 microtainers PLUS 0.5 mL CSF minimum. For Blood Specimens: Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angle to separate cells from serum. Refrigerate spun tube. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date. Must send serum with CSF.

Ordering Recommendations

The immunoglobulin G index is used in evaluations for suspected multiple sclerosis. Patients with inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (e.g., multiple sclerosis) may have increased IgG in their CSF. The CSF index is an indicator of the relative amount of CSF IgG compared to their serum IgG. The CSF Index is a calculated result based on the serum albumin and IgG as well as CSF albumin and IgG.
