Unacceptable Conditions
Blue top tubes: Whole blood or plasma on ice. Clotted sample. Sample collected in glass tube. Unspun specimen > 4 hrs old. Underfilled tube. Gross hemolysis. Lavender top tube: Frozen, clotted and time > 24 Hours Room Temp/ 48 Hours Refrigerated.
Collection Comments
Collect Clear Discard and 4 Full 2.7 mL Blue plastic Tubes, then 1 Lavender in that order. Do not spin Lavender tube. Blue tubes: Do not send whole blood or plasma to lab on ice. Double spin and freeze plasma from Blue top tube within 4 hrs of collection : For each tube spin at 3000rpm for 15 min. Place top 2/3 of plasma in aliquot tube and spin aliquot at 3000 rpm for 15 min. Take top 2/3 of 2nd spin and put into 3 aliquot tubes. Mark aliquot tubes 'plasma'. Freeze aliquots from Blue top tubes immediately. Remember to properly label the aliquot tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date. Send unspun Lavender tube refrigerated and send plasma aliquots from Blue top tubes frozen.

Includes: PTINR, aPTT, TCT, and CBC Reflex criteria include any abnormal result in clotting assays; CBC criteria previously established by Hematology. Reflex tests include mixing study with factor deficiency, circulating AC or dysfibrinogenemia workup; smear review for schistocytes and/or platelet morphology.
