Collection Comments

Send whole blood on ice or refrigerated (preferably within 30 minutes). DO NOT SPIN.
Fasting, resting patient. Based on a request from the IU Health Sepsis Committee, there is a reflex rule in Cerner that will order a second Lactate to be drawn 2 hours in the future when an initial Lactate result is > 2.0 mmol/L. This rule satisfies CMS Guidelines for Sepsis Quality.

Ordering Recommendations

Lactate/lactic acid is a product of anerobic metabolism of glucose. The arterial lactate test is ordered when there is suspicion of hypoxia, lactic acidosis from an acute or chronic process, liver or kidney disease. Based on a request from the IU Health Sepsis Committee, there is a reflex rule in Cerner that will order a second Lactate to be drawn 2 hours in the future when an initial Lactate result is > 2.0 mmol/L. This reflex rule satisfies CMS Guidelines for Sepsis Quality.
