Collect

Midstream urine, Foley catheter, cystoscopic, or suprapubic urine. Place all urines into a gray top vacutainer tube using the vacutainerurine collection and transport kit within 1 hour of collection.. Do not add urine to gray top vacutainer tube if volume is below the minimum fill line. If this situation occurs as well as a delay in transport, the urine sample must be refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions

Nonsterile or leaking containers, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hours), 24-hour or pooled specimens, delayed transport to the lab (greater 48 hours if collected in boric acid), urine collected from Foley catheter bag, Foley catheter tips.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Gray top vacutainer tube room temperature at 20-25°C. The lyphilized urine maintainence formula can maintain the urine specimen for a period of 48 hours at room temperature.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient: boric acid tube: 48 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Performed

Daily, 0700-2100

Remarks

Please note collection method (ie clean catch). A colony count of any potential pathogen and sensitivity (if warranted by the identification and colony count) will  automatically be performed.

Additional Information

** If gram stain is requested:
1.  Make a comment on urine culture order in Pathnet that a gram stain is requested
2.  Note on urine culture Pathnet label that a gram stain is requested.

Performed

Daily, 0700-2100

Methodology

Standard reference procedures for aerobic bacterial culture and identification

Reported

Within 24-48 hours

Synonyms

  • gram stain
  • urine gram stain

Department
