Patient Preparation

Routine venipuncture, needle aspirate, or biopsy.

Collect

One specimen of anticoagulated blood or bone marrow from the patient in either Lavender-top (EDTA) or green-top (Sodium Heparin) vacutainer, or one specimen of hematopoietic tissue or suspected hematopoietic tumor in RPMI or saline damp gauze, or other fluid sample, unfixed, in sterile container.
2-10 mL of blood, >1 mL of bone marrow, >3 cm³ of soft tissue, >8 mL of fluid.

Additional Requirements

Please record collection date and time on the requisition.
A drug treatment history must be supplied which details dates of treatment with lymphocytotoxic agents (ATG, OKT3, rituximab, etc.) and/or growth factors (EPO, G-CSF, etc.).
PNH testing is not provided by this laboratory.

Unacceptable Conditions

Broken tube, mismatched or missing labels, coagulated, blood >47 hours old, MRD specimen >29 hours old, insufficient cellularity, improper fixation, viability <50%, no history provided when requesting MRD.

Specimen Preparation

Please send to Anatomic Pathology (VC14) for accessioning and initial triage.

Storage/Transport Temperature

18 to 25° C, if testing is expected to occur within 8 hours, otherwise, 2-8° C. Do not freeze.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

8 hours at 18-25° C, 47 hours at 2-8° C.  Specimens for MRD assessment are only stable for a maximum of 29 hours.

Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.
