This test detects Mumps (Paramyxovirus) Virus RNA produced following natural infection. This test may be useful for diagnosing current infection with Mumps Virus. NOTE: Suspected mumps cases must be reported immediately to the Local Health Department of the patient's residence.

Buccal or oral swab to include parotid gland, urine, CSF

Collect
Buccal or oral swab
Collect 5 - 10 mL of clean voided urine in a labeled, sterile container. Urine should be collected within 3 days of onset of symptoms.
Collect spinal fluid within 7 days of onset of symptoms. Collect in sterile, labeled container. Do NOT put into virus transport medium.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Transport specimen to laboratory on ice packs
Unacceptable Conditions
Specimens received outside of stability. Specimens that leaked in transit. Unlabeled specimens. Mislabeled specimens or specimens having less than 2 patient identifiers. Specimens received in an inappropriate preservative or collection container.

Refrigerated (2-8 °C): up to 24 hours; Frozen (-60 to -80 °C): up to 6 months
