Serum: Serum Separator Tube (SST/Gold)

Acceptable:
Serum: Red Top (No additives)
Plasma: Sodium Heparin (NaHep/Green Top)

Preferred non-fasting sample, but fasting samples are accepted.

Specimen Preparation

On Site:
Specimen must be transported to the Metabolic lab within 2h of draw.
Preferred: Specimen should be on ice/refrigerated within 2h of draw.
Acceptable: Specimen should be on ice/refrigerated and arrive within 6h of draw or at room temperature and arrive within 2h of draw.

Off site:
Preferred: Specimen should be spun down within 2h of draw when transported on ice/refrigerated.
Acceptable: Specimen should be spun down within 6h of draw when transported on ice/refrigerated or within 2h of draw when transported at room temperature.

Non-CHOP Clients:
Preferred: Specimen should be spun down within 2h of draw and Plasma/Serum removed and frozen in separate tube. Specimen needs to be frozen when transported on dry ice.
Acceptable: Specimen should be spun down within 6h of draw and Plasma/Serum removed and frozen in separate tube. Specimen needs to be frozen when transported on dry ice and transported overnight.
 

Unacceptable Conditions

1. Receive whole blood specimen at room temperature after 2 hours of collection
2. Receive whole blood specimen refrigerated/on ice after 6 hours of collection
3. Receive separated serum/plasma at room temperature
4. Receive separated serum/plasma refrigerated (not frozen)
5. Insufficient sample volume
6. Improper sample handling and transport
7. Any other body fluid not listed above
8. Contaminated specimen

Refrigerated at 4C / on ice: 6 hours
Frozen in -20C for 5 days
