Specimen Preparation
CHOP Patient Samples: Transport 5 mL whole blood in red top tube to Central Lab Services (CLS). CLS will separate serum, place back in original vacutainer, refrigerate (or freeze if storage exceeds 24 hrs), and transport to Anatomic Pathology next business day.
CHOP Patient Samples: Whole blood held at room temperature > 2 hours, refrigerated > 1 week, or frozen. Specimen unlabeled, mislabeled, not ordered appropriately.
External Client Samples: Whole blood. Serum specimen not frozen. Specimen unlabeled, mislabeled, not ordered appropriately.
Storage/Transport Temperature
CHOP Patient Samples: Deliver to Central Lab Services immediately for processing to separate out the serum. The serum should then be refrigerated/frozen, if received after hours, holidays or weekends; during normal working hours take to Pathology immediately.
